A twist on a classic board game
I collaborated with the talented industrial designer Jeremiah Tien to work on a project together while we were both co-ops at Hasbro. He was exploring adding dimensions to traditional flat board games and we decided to explore a five-in-a-row board game with the gimmick of being able to alter the playing board in various ways. We decided to prototype a 3D playing board with walls that can be swapped or rotated. We designed the pieces to attach magnetically to the board to make the experience when playing on this board neat and satisfying. We went through a couple of prototypes before creating a version that was polished enough to test with others to get feedback about the game idea.
Magnetic Pieces
A very satisfying design element with the latest prototype was the addition of magnetic pieces, making placing pieces onto the vertical board much easier and satisfying.
Playtesting
There hasn't been one defined ruleset for this game yet because new elements are being discovered as play sessions are conducted, but it has been delightful to see people embrace the twist on a classic board game and to try and wrap their heads around the new aspect of moveable 3D board.
